Section information
This course considers challenges to the security and stability of the European continent, balancing current events--particularly the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict--within their historical backdrop. We will survey Europe’s major security challenges, including: European identity, integration, and cohesiveness; international migration, refugees and asylum policies; terrorism; nuclear and other weapons of mass destruction; and the weaponization of space. Particular emphasis will be given to the role of NATO, OSCE, and similar organizations in confronting these challenges amid the “New Cold War” posed by great-power rivalry among Europe, the United States, Russia and China.
