Course description
Examines the history of Turkey with an emphasis on its relationship with the Western world. Major topics include the Ottoman Empire; Ataturk and the founding of the Republic of Turkey; Turkey’s role in the Cold War, Kurdish and other minority populations; the changing Turkish political landscape, the evolution of Islamist politics; and recent relations with the United States and European Union. Prerequisite: INST/POLS 1200 or 1250 and INST/POLS 2310 or permission of instructor.
