Section information

In this course, students will explore creative writing as a craft, a practice, and a way of seeing the world. We’ll study and write across three major genres—poetry, creative nonfiction, and fiction—with an emphasis on voice, imagery, structure, and revision. The approach will value the process of writing over the final product and encourage students to experiment, reflect, and think critically about decisions. Both students who are new to creative writing or have experience will benefit from further developing their writing practice. They will begin to learn how to read like writers as well as engage in respectful, supportive, and generous discussion of one another’s work. The semester will be structured around the three genre-based units. Each will end with a creative submission and a workshop session. Throughout each unit, we will engage with low-stakes generative writing activities, have fruitful discussions in our classroom community, and respond to various texts. Finally, we will a portfolio to wrap the semester which includes a revised piece and a short artist statement.
